Places to Visit in Edirne

Edirne, which served as the capital of the Ottoman Empire for 88 years until the conquest of Istanbul, is one of our cities where a different historical treasure is hidden in every corner and must be seen. Bordering Greece and Bulgaria, Edirne hosts many tourist attractions such as the Topkapı Palace, the enchanting Üç-Şerefeli Mosque, the Edirne Palace which was once the largest palace of the Ottoman period along with Rüstem Pasha, and the masterpiece of Mimar Sinan, the Selimiye Mosque, which now serves as the Edirne Health Museum, as well as the Sultan 2nd Beyazıt Complex which now serves as Edirne Health Museum, Adliye Köşkü Caravanserai, and many more.

Selimiye Mosque and Complex: One of the masterpieces of Mimar Sinan, this monument is like the crown jewel of the city. The Selimiye Mosque, considered the pinnacle of single-domed structures in the world, is a masterpiece of Mimar Sinan. It is also the pinnacle of Ottoman Turkish architecture. The historic mosque, visible from all parts of the city, was built between 1569 and 1575 during the reign of Sultan Selim II. All the tiles, lines, marbles, and decorations inside are individual works of art.

The Edirne Selimiye Complex, one of Turkey's most important cultural heritage sites, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011.

Old Mosque - Edirne Grand Mosque: Commissioned by Şehzade Süleyman Çelebi, son of Yıldırım Beyazıt, the construction of the mosque was completed by his brother, Ottoman Sultan Mehmet Çelebi, in 1414. It is the first of the Sultan Mosques built in Edirne. The wide calligraphy in the Old Mosque is remarkable.

The black stone next to the pulpit in the Old Mosque comes from the Kaaba and is considered sacred.

Beyazıt Darüşşifası Health Museum: Built during the Bayezid period, the hospital is one of the most magnificent Ottoman structures in Edirne with its original architecture. Various methods were used here to treat patients. You can see music therapy, nutrition, and how various health problems were treated in the museum. After the visit, you will have the privilege of visiting a very important place in Turkey's medical history.

Üç Şerefeli Mosque: Commissioned by Murat to Mimar Muslihiddin, the mosque is one of the first works in the transition from Seljuk architecture to Ottoman architecture.

The Üç Şerefeli Mosque is a very interesting structure with its 4 different minarets. The mosque, named after the three-tiered minarets, has 3 separate exits. The Üç Şerefeli Mosque is also known as the Burmalı Mosque because one of its minarets is twisted.

Ali Pasha Bazaar: Built by Grand Vizier Hersekli Ali Pasha in 1560. The historical structure, reminiscent of the bedesten in Istanbul, is one of Mimar Sinan's works.

In the Ottoman centuries, Edirne's largest shopping center was used. Shops line both sides of a long corridor. Today, it is one of the busiest shopping spots in Edirne.

Şükrü Pasha Monument and Balkan War Museum: The monument and museum were built to commemorate the martyrs of the 1912-1913 Balkan Wars. The tomb of Şükrü Pasha, who defended Edirne in hardship during the war, was brought from Istanbul to Edirne in 1988, and a monument was erected in his name.

In addition to the monument, a museum has been established here that tells about the Balkan wars and consists of objects belonging to the people of Edirne at that time. The Şükrü Pasha monument, which deserves to be written in golden letters in Edirne, was built in 1998 by Prof. Tankut Öktem. The Kıyık Tabya behind the monument is now used as the Balkan War Museum.

In the museum located in the Kıyık Tabya, one of the 30 towers that played an important role in the defense of Edirne; army canteens, resting places, women who prepared ammunition and war plans, war balls, menu lists, various visuals, and photographs will take you back in time.

Meriç Bridge: Construction of the bridge began in 1842 during the reign of Sultan Abdülmecit and was completed in 1847. The historic bridge over the Meriç River on the Edirne-Karaağaç road is 263 meters high.

Also, the "guardhouse" at the Meriç Bridge is remarkable for its purpose. As you walk on the historic Stone Bridge, all the past scenes come to life in your eyes.

Lausanne Monument: The Lausanne Monument was built in memory of the Lausanne Treaty, which determined our current borders on July 24, 1923. The Karaağaç region was taken from Greece as compensation. This museum and monument were built in the Karaağaç district, where the rectorate campus of Trakya University is located.

The monument, symbolizing the Victory of Lausanne and world peace, has become an important point of visitation with the museum displaying documents related to "Lausanne and İsmet İnönü". The Trakya University campus in Karaağaç, the old train station building, and the Lausanne Monument are some of the places you must visit in Edirne.

The "National Struggle and Lausanne Treaty Museum", established to tell about the national struggle experienced in the Thrace region during the National Struggle and Lausanne Treaty, was opened on April 19, 2016.

Gala Lake National Park: Located in the Enez and İpsala districts of Edirne in Thrace, the national park, which includes the Pamuklu and Gala Lakes, has a rich ecosystem.
